In sci-fi movies and TV, holograms have long embodied a bevy of characters, including Princess Leia and The Doctor on “Star Trek: Voyager.” A big part of the appeal of these 3D representations is that they occupy the same space we do and that we can interact with them in a way we can’t with 2D videos and photos. Beyond the fictional world, holograms are starting to help humans in real life. They’re translators, teachers and preservers of memories.

“Our children are the first generation to start to expect spatial – or 3D, volumetric – content,” says Jason Waskey, a principal creative director for Microsoft.

The processors transform raw data from 106 cameras into a versatile 3D asset using Microsoft Mixed Reality Capture Studios software.

The process combines Infrared and RGB camera information with silhouette data to generate 3D mesh and texture sequences. The data then undergoes several more phases of temporal smoothing, keyframing, and compression encoding to generate the final asset – a small yet powerful .mp4 file, which can be integrated into 3D pipelines with native plugins for Unity and Unreal Engine, and into VFX pipelines for virtual production.

Rad assisted in the creative direction and production of the hologram files and then built support into the Rad Android application to allow users and WWE fans to bring their favorite fighters with them anywhere they went.
